Hiring A Part Time Maid Service – A Solution For Busy People

Singapore is one of the most dynamic countries in the world. Characteristic that can be especially seen in those individuals who work and live in urban areas. Most people not only have full time jobs, but also work extra hours in order to seize every opportunity. Unfortunately, this creates the rather difficult challenge of balancing the professional aspect of life, with the personal one. Luckily, there are solutions.

One of them is hiring a domestic worker. Unfortunately, these individuals are usually stranger to the family or household that they work for and offer little guarantees in terms of security.

Nowadays, the preferred choice of most people is to hire a part time Maid Service Compared to a basic domestic worker, these individuals are affiliates of various cleaning companies that usually accept full responsibility in case anything goes wrong.
Advantages of hiring a part-time house cleaner

Hiring an individual to take care of a household, through one of these companies has several advantages:
· Financially – Most people think that the cost of hiring someone through a cleaning company is much higher than hiring a maid personally due to the fact that the organization that they work for sets the prices. In reality, it is quite the opposite. The cost of hiring a maid on a part-time basis is perfectly balanced for the amount of hours worked.
· Security – An important advantage of hiring a house maid through a cleaning service is the fact that the client will never have to worry about risks of letting a stranger into his house while he is away. The cleaning companies typically accept responsibility for all of the house cleaner’s actions.
· Professionalism – When hiring an individual through a cleaning company, the client has the guarantee that he will receive a quality service. The cleaning service providers understand that reputation is extremely important for a business and only hire professionals.

· Spend time doing what is important – hiring a house cleaner to work part-time gives you the option to focus on the things that are more urgent, while knowing that someone else will handle all the domestic chores while you are away.
· Peace of mind – Probably one of the best things when paying someone to clean your house is the certainty that you will never have to go home to a messy home. Hiring a cleaning service guarantees the fact that the house will always be presentable and ready for guests.
Disadvantages of hiring a part-time maid:

This having been said, there are also a few disadvantages of hiring cleaning maids. These are not in any way deal breaking, but they can create difficulties if not handled with care.
· The need for training – When hiring a house cleaner, remember that although whoever comes to your house has sufficient training and experience in this line of work, every house is different. It is important to tell the maid of your various preferences regarding how the house should be cleaned and how it should look.
· Expectations – Remember the fact that while a cleaning service only employs professionals, this does not mean that will do a better job than you could. Most maids will clean to the best of their abilities, in the allotted time, and then go home.
· Change is not always good – Conflicts can arise in any kind of situation and the way most companies deal the moment when the homeowner and the maid don’t see eye to eye is to send a replacement. A new house cleaner means that all the conversations regarding the different preferences linked to how the house should look will have to be repeated.
· It will still cost a pretty penny – Hiring someone part-time will always cost less than paying for a full-time service, but it will always cost. You will essentially be paying someone to do the things that you could do for free but don’t have the time.

The Easy Way to floor cleaning wood Using Vinegar—So You Can Skip the Chemicals

Cleaning wood floors with vinegar is not only easy, it’s one of the best ways to get the job done. Residue from many commercial floor cleaners and the buildup of dirt, dust, and other unwanted debris can make wood floors look dull. If you’re wondering how to clean wood floors to make them shiny without leaving a film, the answer is vinegar.

When used properly, vinegar is completely safe on hardwood floors—but there are a few things you need to know.

Choose the Right Kind of Vinegar

Make sure you are using the right kind of vinegar. White vinegar is ideal for floor cleaning service. You can also buy cleaning vinegar ($14;, which generally has a higher concentration of acid than regular vinegar. If you need to clean your wood floors and don’t have either one of these types of vinegar on hand, you can use apple cider vinegar as an alternative. Do not use red wine or balsamic vinegar.

Vacuum First

According to Jennifer Gregory, the brand manager of Molly Maid, floor cleaning services with vinegar is very easy. The first step is to always vacuum first. “It is best to establish a weekly routine of vacuuming your floors, especially high-traffic areas like hallways,” she says.

If you have wood floors, a high-quality vacuum is imperative. The Dyson V11 ($600; is a cordless stick vacuum that easily fits into small spaces like narrow hallways or under tables and sofas. But perhaps one of the best features of this appliance is that it automatically adjusts for different types of flooring. No need to bend down or adjust a setting if you’re transitioning from carpet to wood, tile, or other types of floors like laminate and linoleum.

Before you start cleaning, it’s important to check the underside of the appliance and make sure there isn’t any stuck-on debris that can potentially cause scratching. If there is, make sure you it’s unplugged and clean it off entirely.

How to Clean Wood Floors With Vinegar

Once a month (or more often if necessary), wood floors should be mopped to deep clean the wood and make them shine, Gregory says. The O-Cedar Easy Wring Spin Mop ($35; is perfect for this purpose. The mop is soft and won’t scratch floors because it’s made of a microfiber blend. The triangle shape also helps to clean corners and other small areas. Additionally, it comes with a bucket that features a built-in device with a foot pedal to wring out the mop. No need to concern yourself with a mess, dripping, streaking, or accidentally using too much water, which can potentially seep into floors and ultimately cause damage.

Gregory suggests filling the bucket with a solution that contains one gallon of hot water and one cup of white vinegar. Don’t forget to mix! “Work the mop in an “S” motion, leading with the same side every time to catch the dirt, instead of spreading it around,” she says. Replace the dirty solution every time you move to a new room for maximum effectiveness.

Be careful not to overload your mop with the vinegar solution. “Never saturate your wood floors with water,” Gregory says. “Make sure to wring out the mop each time you dip it into your bucket.”

Once the floors are clean, use a floor polish or wax to make them really shine.

Natural Alternatives to Vinegar

While cleaning wood floors with vinegar and water is ideal, it isn’t the only natural option. If you like the cleaning power of vinegar but want to cut the smell, just add an essential oil, such as lemon. Lemon oil also helps to cut grease, which may be very useful if you’re trying to clean wood floors in a kitchen. It’s also a great disinfectant, which is something you may want to consider if you have pets that make your floors dirty.

Another way to clean wood floors naturally is with castile soap. Dr. Bronner’s ($18.50 for 2; is a great alternative to vinegar and has many other uses beyond household surfaces. It can be used in the shower in place of shower gel or traditional bar soap. You can also use castile soap to wash your laundry, instead of traditional detergent.

Another advantage of castile soap is that it smells great. Dr. Bronner’s is available in many different scents, including peppermint, cherry blossom, lavender, and green tea, along with an unscented version.

To clean floors using castile soap, mix 1/8 to 1/4 cup into a bucket of hot water. Then mop as you normally would. There’s no need to rinse. Just be careful about using castile soap on waxed floors because it can potentially remove the wax.

The 5 Golden Rules of kitchen cleaning Organizing, According to a Cookbook Author

These 5 mini moves will make your kitchen cleaning much more organized.  product we feature has been independently selected and reviewed by our editorial team. If you make a purchase using the links included, we may earn commission . PinFBMore

If you want to figure out some smart solutions for finally wrangling your kitchen clutter, turn to your favorite food bloggers and cookbook authors. Unlike restaurant chefs, food bloggers can spend just as much time in their kitchens, but they may not have the luxury of an enormous kitchen or professional equipment. Especially if they run their blog or do recipe development out of their home kitchen, they’ve likely created a highly organized system that works for them. And when it’s also designed to be Instagram-ready, you know it’s full of ideas that are both practical and pretty.

Case in point: the gorgeous and impeccably organized home kitchen of Sonja Overhiser, one half of the food blog A Couple Cooks and co-author (along with her husband Alex) of the new vegetarian cookbook Pretty Simple Cooking. She gave us a peek inside her orderly kitchen (see more on the A Couple Cooks Instagram account) and shared the rules she follows to keep it that way. Add these simple guidelines to your routine, and watch your kitchen turn into the most Insta-worthy room in your house.

A Couple Cooks

1Only display what’s both beautiful and functional.

“When we decided to feature open shelving for our kitchen reno, we knew that we’d have to stay neat—which is not our natural tendency!” Sonja explains. “To help overcome this, we decided our open shelving could only showcase things we find both beautiful and functional—that is, things we want to look at that also serve a purpose! For example, we chose blue ball jars for drinking glasses because they’re fun to look at and functional. We determined the color scheme for the remaining items would be neutrals and copper. . .After setting up this scheme, we let go and allow it to be a changing art piece!”

A Couple Cooks

2For everything that’s functional but not beautiful—hide it!

“We keep our coffee appliances on our shelves and our copper stand mixer on the counter because we think they are beautiful. Other appliances we hide away in cabinets, including our microwave! We designed our kitchen to keep our microwave in the pantry cabinet to keep it out of sight,” says Sonja.

3When you get something new, get rid of something old.

The “one in, one out” guideline may be the golden rule of organizing, but in a kitchen cleaning service that’s full of tools and gadgets, it can be particularly difficult to follow. How does Sonja stick to it? By being strict and avoiding multiple appliances that serve the same function. “For example, we just got an Instant Pot, so we got rid of our rice maker since they perform the same function,” she says.

A Couple Cooks

4Refresh your spices once per year.

“Spices can overwhelm your cabinets, plus they do lose flavor gradually over time. Comb through them annually and discard very old or unused spices.” Sonja’s favorite method is to store spices in glass jars in a shallow drawer and label the lids.

5Make your most-used items easiest to access.

“If you use an appliance or utensil time and again, you don’t want to be rooting around in a cabinet every time you access it. Try to organize your drawers and cabinets to keep your key tools easy to access,” recommends Sonja. In her own kitchen, Sonja stashes the most frequently reached for plates, cups, and bowls on the bottom shelves.

Cleaning Product

19 Of My Top Cleaning Products

Let’s face it – we hate them, but we all need them. These are my top go-to cleaning product !

OK, so I’ve established myself as a clean-freak in this post, now I thought I would introduce you to my top cleaning products of all time. I’ve had a lifetime of cleaning and testing various products to know the ropes. These are my staple cleaning products that I come back to time and time again.

At times, I do test other cleaning products but always manage to return to this list of products. I do have a few that I’ve enlisted as per the past two years or so, and now they are a permanent part of my cleaning tribe.

19 of my Favorite Cleaning Products – Tried and True

Nineteen you are saying? Really? That many? Once you see the list, you will hopefully understand better as to why so many. I have a sound reason for each of these products I use. Also worth mentioning, I’ve tried the “natural” and “organic” cleaners out there, and honestly, and most never did the job correctly and ended up a waste of money.

Mind you, this is just my opinion as per my experience with them. I am always mindful not to waste any of my cleaning products, and use coupons each and every time I buy them.

OK, so on with this list.

1 – Fantastik all Purpose Cleaner – Fantastik has been a staple cleaning product in my arsenal for years. I use it for almost everything and everywhere. Bathrooms, kitchen, walls, floors, just about everywhere. It’s antibacterial as well which I adore in a cleaner. I know, I’ve read all the hype about using antibacterial products and how they essentially kill the good bacteria as well – but I think at times, it’s essential to kill them.

It’s great for bathrooms – bowls, countertops (yes, I use it on my granite tops too in kitchen and bathroom). It doesn’t leave streaks, it leaves a nice shine and clean feeling to everything it touches! I love how it cleans my stove too. Grease doesn’t stand a chance!

Amazon sells a two pack for $4.84! Best deal ever!

2 – Windex – OK who doesn’t use Windex raise your hand. Everyone – good. I’ve tried generic brands like Glass Plus, and yes, at times I will switch especially if there is a good sale.

Amazon sells them for $3.09 which is a great price!

3 – Fantastik with Bleach – This is a powerhouse cleaner. I attack my shower door tracking with this and wow, no mold, no mildew. Do I use it every time I clean my bathroom – no. I do it at least once a week. All you need to do is spray and walk away for around 10 minutes – then come back and flush with water. It’s amazing.

I love it for my kitchen sinks as well. It cleans that brownish film around the drains. You can really use this anywhere in your home. Just be mindful that it’s got bleach in it. You wouldn’t want to ruin any fabric it might come into contact with.

fantastik bleach

4 – Lysol Bowl Cleaner – I have tried so many types of bowl cleaners – the disposable types with the cleaner built into the scrubber brush, the stick type, I think I’ve tried most all of them and I keep coming back to this – simple, works great, and the price is just right. They also sell one with bleach which I often purchase as well.

5 – Lysol Disinfecting Wipes – I keep a container of this product in each bathroom, and in the kitchen. I use them daily to touch-up the bowl, vanity, and floors in my bathrooms. I have 3 bathrooms, so that’s a lot of touching up for me. I’d be lost without these. They make life so much easier. Just wipe and throw away. They are awesome for kitchen clean-up too!

lysol wipes

6 – Comet Cleanser w Bleach – Comet has been around for what seems like forever. I use this when I need a deep clean. It’s great for using on the bottom of your tub, kitchen sinks, anywhere you need to scrub the dirt away. Since it has bleach, it does a superb job of cleaning away the grime.

The flip-top as shown in the image below is the best packaging. This product will get all over the place if you use the older packaging – you know, the one with the little adhesive sticker over the top holes? Yeah, that nightmare.

7 – Endust Stainless Steel Cleaner – WOW and WOW – this stuff really works! I’ve tried several other stainless steel cleaners and they all pale in comparison to this one. Endust leaves no streaking, no dull finish, no intense buffing. All you do is spray and wipe – and done! It also prevents grime and streak build-up. I use this on all of my stainless steel appliances, my fridge, microwave, trash-can, anything stainless! I was, at one point, seriously going to get rid of all my stainless until I tried this product. I tell everyone about it and they all thank me! You will too!

8 – Pledge – Bottom line, Pledge is the best furniture cleaner out there. They have several types now too. I’ve tried them all and I like them all. I usually get the one that’s on sale or the one I have a coupon for. Simply stated – it cleans, shines, and prevents dust build-up on your furniture.

The Pledge Wipes are great too. I use them daily!

9 – Pledge Multi-Surface – The reason I have this listed as its own product instead of under the blanket of all Pledge products is because it is very different in nature. While you can use this just about anywhere and on anything, I like it for electronic products. It’s not a product I use daily, but I do use it at least once a week to give all of my electronics a good once-over.

10 – Swiffer 360 Dusters – My life has been made simpler because of this product. I am Swiffer crazy! There isn’t a day when I don’t use them. I am always dusting around with these. Up high – down low – you name it. There is also a huge difference between these and the regular Swiffer.

swiffer duster

The 360’s have a dusting fabric on both sides, and wow do they make a huge difference when dusting. You will be surprised at how long they last. While they might seem expensive, you really get your monies worth in durability. I also love the extender wand too.

swiffer duster extender

11 – Swiffer WetJet Floor Cleaner – I really adore this mop. It cleans my floors like no other. It does the job like no other. You have to purchase the pads and the liquid, but I usually always have coupons for them. This product does the trick! Your floors will be squeaky clean!

liquid swiffer

12 – Mr. Clean Magic Eraser – Is there anything this little sponge can’t clean? This little sponge is a miracle! Anyplace I see a scuff, or dings, or dirt, or anything! The downside is, they fall apart rather quickly. I don’t like that at all. You really can’t get much use out of each one because of that. The original type is better at staying together than the other model. I try to stick with the original.

magic eraser

13 – Cascade Complete – This is another product I keep coming back to. I’ve tried so many types, and I’ve seen the difference Cascade makes – especially the Cascade Complete. My dishes are spot and streak free. Simple as that!

cascasde14 – S.O.S Pads – These are so much better than Brillo – there, I said it. Well, they are. There is no comparison. They have more suds, more staying power, more scrubbing power, and I love them for those tough jobs like pots and pan messiness!

SOS pads

15 – Downy Fabric Softener – Can my clothes get any softer? I’ve tried so many types of softener and Downy seems to work best. I’ve tried cheaper fabric softeners and there is a huge difference for sure. Plus, it’s concentrated so that you use so much less!

16 – Purex Laundry Detergent – Dollar for dollar, you can’t beat Purex. I find it cleans just as nicely as Tide and is less than half the price – especially when they go on sale and you have a coupon! Purex makes my laundry smell heavenly. It’s great at pre-treating and removing stains too! And with my hubby, I need it. He drops food on everything!

    1. Berkley and Jensen Paper towels, and Berkley and Jensen Facial Tissue, and Scott Toilet Paper – All three of these paper products rock in my world. The Berkley and Jensen and Scott I get from BJ’s Wholesale Club. Plus, they always have a coupon available for at least one of them. I have tried so many types of paper towels and hands-down, I think they are one of the best out there.

  • Recommendations For carpet cleaning And Drying Carpets
  • Beyond Routine Cleaning: Caring For Over-Saturated Carpets

Proper equipment, adequate air movement and a measure of patience can speed up the drying process

carpet cleaning service , It’s no secret carpets require regularly scheduled cleaning to maintain their appearance and prolong their lifespan. But sometimes carpet cleaning programs overlook the importance of drying carpets after cleaning them. And carpets that remain damp for too long can attract more dirt, harbor unpleasant odors, or — even worse — create a breeding ground for mold.

“Drying the carpet is as important as cleaning the carpet,” says John Poole, a consultant with the American Institute of Cleaning Science in Atlanta, Georgia. “If you leave the carpet wet, you’ll set off mold and mildew, so it’s critical to clean and dry it thoroughly.”

Toward this end, the first step is to identify what type of carpet the staff is cleaning.

“You need to understand that carpet because the wrong chemical or system can damage it,” says Poole. To avoid a possible violation of the carpet warranty, he suggests calling the manufacturer to determine the recommended maintenance schedule.

Soil level and climate will also factor into how the carpet is cleaned and dried. Some carpet care experts advocate hot water extraction for heavily soiled areas or deep cleanings, with low-moisture methods, such as encapsulation, used on an interim basis to maintain the carpet.

“Step one is to extract the maximum moisture using a machine vetted by The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI),” says Allen Rathey, president of The Healthy Facilities Institute, Boise, Idaho. “Carpet extraction equipment awarded the CRI Seal of Approval is designed to remove most of the moisture that results from a wet cleaning process.”

While low-moisture carpet cleaning procedures will result in dry times that are faster than extraction, the techniques and equipment used to speed up the drying process are essentially the same.

Air Power

Once carpets have been cleaned, the best way to speed up the drying process is to introduce and circulate air.

“All moisture has to wick,” notes Bill Yeadon, senior instructor at Jon-Don Inc., Roselle, Illinois. “We can make wicking go faster anytime we move air across the surface of the carpet.”

This can be as simple as opening a window or a door — if weather permits.

“Ventilate with fresh air when the outdoor air is dryer than indoors, and when building security systems or other protocols permit,” says Rathey. “Directing outdoor air into and out of the structure will enable faster drying.”

Additionally, the use of air movers and HVAC systems can cut dry times significantly — especially when used in tandem.

“Air conditioning is probably the best dehumidifier we have, because its purpose is to pull the moisture out of the air,” says Yeadon.

When cleaning carpets in the evening hours, Poole recommends leaving fans and HVAC on overnight whenever possible. And those times when it’s not hot enough to turn on the air conditioning or cold enough to turn on the heat, or when outdoor air is not an option, custodians may have to rely solely on air movers.

“If it has been raining and/or the outdoor ambient air is damp, or if ventilation is not appropriate, fans should be used to direct drier air over and through the carpet,” notes Rathey. “Also, fans suffice for situations when carpet is properly extracted and interior relative humidity is low enough that fan-drying — perhaps coupled with air conditioning or central heat and (with care) space heaters — will dry the carpet within several hours.”

According to Rathey, properly cleaned and extracted carpets should dry within a few hours. Even in the most extreme situations, carpets should be dry within 12 to 24 hours. It just comes down to the number of fans and their placement, which depend on ambient air conditions and the fan’s capacity.

As a rule of thumb, when drying carpet in a hallway, Poole recommends placing air movers on opposite ends of the area immediately after extraction. For a room measuring approximately 25 by 25 feet, Yeadon suggests two to three standard fans, pointing toward the middle of the room, or one fan that pushes air out in a 360-degree circle positioned in the center of the room.

Maid Service

11 Worst Mistakes People Make When Choosing A Maid Service Agency

If you are looking to keep your house neat and tidy, but are unable to do so due to a busy work schedule, approaching a maid agency is the perfect solution. You can determine the frequency of the clean ups or it may even be a one time job. By hiring the right company, you will get the best results, leaving your house looking as good as new!
However, when it comes to choosing a maid agency, there are certain factors which need careful consideration.

Maid Services

Look below to see the list of some of the worst mistakes which you must avoid at all costs:

Mistake 1: Not Looking At Reviews
Previous reviews and recommendations will tell you whether the

Maid Service agency is great, awful or anything in between. These are the people who will be present in your house, sorting through your things and looking into different rooms. Due to the time it takes, you may choose to call them over when you are out of the way. Being present in your house unsupervised, it is best that you check out their reviews in order to decide whether they are trustworthy and reliable.

Mistake 2: Believing Everything You Are Told
This is a by-product of Mistake 1. When you believe everything advertised on the official website of the maid service without looking into outside reviews, you may be setting yourself up for a trap. Marketing is the key to any business, and in not believing all of this, lies the success of the consumer. Look beyond the services provided by the official website and check out their rate of effectiveness on other websites or through previous customers before settling on a particular Maids Services agency.

Mistake 3: Choosing A Company Not Approved By The Consumer’s Association of Singapore
False advertising is not unheard of. In fact, it is an old ploy meant to lure customers in and entrap them before they know what is happening. So before selecting a maid agency, do your own research to determine whether they are truly approved by the Consumer’s Association of Singapore. No matter what their website states, the truth may surprise you. This is because if they are not, then there is a chance that you may undergo some jail time! In dealing with the possibility of such serious consequences, it is best to not take any chances.

Mistake 4: Thinking Lowest Means Best
Choosing an agency with the lowest price may often mean that you receive the lowest quality of service. Save yourself the trouble and avoid basing your decision solely on the price range. Instead, look into the quality of service provided, and ask previous customers about their evaluation of the agency. It is better to pay a little extra than having to pay twice for another maid agency to clean up the mess the first agency left behind.

Mistake 5: Not Making A Plan
Would you like to clean the living room and the kitchen? Should the maid service also clean the curtains and do the laundry? Do you need the bathrooms cleaned as well? All these factors need to be determined before selecting a maid agency. By choosing a maid service without looking into this, you may effectively be making one of the worst mistakes possible. This is because not all agencies offer every service. Most of them come with a limited range of services, and by not conducting proper research, you may be in for a surprise when your newly hired maid refuses to do the laundry.

Maid Agency

Mistake 6: Not Discovering The Maid’s Past
The maid is going to be working in your house, keeping your furniture clean and the place presentable. Whether this becomes a daily ritual, a regular event or a one time thing, it is best that she is someone who is responsible and respectable. As a result, approach the company to find out the background of their candidates. Ask them of the background searches they themselves may have conducted to find out for sure whether the agency is a reliable one.

Mistake 7: Choosing A Company That Doesn’t Provide You With A Free Consultation
Most maid agencies will give you a free consultation before you pick a maid. They will be able to send multiple candidates over for you to select from. This is especially true when hiring a maid for daily services. Moreover, an individual consultation is also necessary for both you and the maid to understand what is required of the job at hand. A company that doesn’t offer this service is a company to be skeptical about.

Mistake 8: Not Knowing the Products/Chemicals Used in Cleaning
Ask your maid agency about the products they use to clean houses. This is extremely necessary for people with allergies which could likely be sparked through the use of particular products. So stay on the alert and avoid the horrible sensation of a sudden allergy outbreak.

Mistake 9: Not Selecting A Company With A Guarantee
A company with a guarantee is a company proud of its performance. A guarantee shows its respectability as well as provides an assurance of a job well done. By selecting a company without a guarantee, it is likely that you will not be entirely satisfied with the results.

Mistake 10: Not Selecting A Helpful Agency
In approaching an agency to find out more information, note how forthcoming they are. See if they are willing to help you with dedication and commitment to put you at ease. If you have a problem with the maid, these are the people you will be approaching. As a result, if they aren’t forthcoming as you try to decide on an agency and find out more about them, they won’t be helpful in case of problems and discomfort in the future.

Mistake 11: Selecting An Agency With A Per-Hour Rate
If you are looking to go easy on your wallet without compromising on the services offered, the best advice would be to select an agency that provides a flat rate for their services. An agency with per-hour rates could result in the maids taking longer to complete their given tasks in order to increase their salary.

By avoiding the above mistakes, you can easily select a maid agency to provide you with the most satisfactory services. After all, a maid can make your entire life easier, or be the gateway to hell. Save yourself the trouble, and select an agency which is willing to work hand in hand with you for the best results! to contact .. Dubai Maid Service

Resolutions Rescue: Clean Out The Refrigerator

without , sharjah cleaning service , AL ain cleaning service , dubai cleaning service, abu dhabi cleaning service

Cut the Clutter: A Simple Organization Plan for a Clean and Tidy Home
It’s January. Do you know where your New Years resolutions are?

All those resolutions that looked so basic, so easy, so noble through the champagne haze of New Year’s Eve have lost their rosy glow, when viewed in the stark light of a January morning.

With the children back to school and holiday decorations back in their attic boxes, our resolve for a better, thinner, healthier and wealthier year has once more washed up against the hard and niggling realities of daily life.

Be of good cheer! There’s a tried-and-true boost for just about anybody’s New Year’s resolutions.

I’m talking about cleaning service the refrigerator. Spearing the Great White Whale.

Think about it! The refrigerator holds it all: food and finance, weight and well-being, organization and chaos, all rolled into one big cold box. Dive into that baby with a detached eye, a hardened heart and one small hour of time and you’re on the road to weight loss, better household management, and a healthier budget.

The timing couldn’t be better, because I know what your refrigerator looks like! Plastic food storage containers pile in unsteady ziggurats in every corner–and why is it that the largest bowls and boxes hold the smallest amounts of food?

Open cans of olive juice have lost plastic wrap coverings to a succession of sneaking fingers. A yellow sticky puddle surrounds the triangular hole in the top of the can of evaporated milk. Crumbs and butter dot the face of the leftover cranberry sauce.

Greasy zipper storage bags hold what’s left of the Christmas turkey: one lone drumstick and several dried and curling slices of overdone breast meat. Sliced remnants of margarine sticks hide in unlikely places, waiting to hurl themselves to the oblivion of the kitchen floor when the refrigerator door is opened.

Where to begin? There’s a bit of an aesthetic to spearing the Great White Whale.

There’s something to be said about waiting until the weight-loss advertising jingles displace the mental Muzak drone of holiday carols. This is not a job in which holiday sentiment is an asset. A spat with one’s spouse or children will also fuel the harpoon, but same is not recommended in the interest of family harmony.

Think tough. Firm. Resolved. Then gather your tools: a large, lined garbage can, a sink-ful of soapy water, spray bottles of degreaser and window cleaner, lots of cleaning cloths and a pen and notepad. Clear the kitchen counters so you can sort and spread out with impunity, and an empty dishwasher should await your container collection.

Most important, before you begin, turn your refrigerator off–and unplug it, too, for good measure. We want the only shocks you receive to be from the code dates on some of your food!

Start at the top. Remove everything from the top refrigerator shelf. Holiday leftovers go directly into the garbage can. Show no pity or mercy! If it hasn’t been eaten by now, it’s because the family will scream if presented with ham in one more disguise. Open everything, and when it doubt, toss it out!

Plastic food storage containers are consigned to the dishwasher after a brief rinse. The shelf goes directly to the sink’s soapy water. While it soaks off the grime of Christmas past, use your degreaser spray to clean the refrigerator’s ceiling and walls down to the next shelf. Wash the shelf, dry and replace it–but don’t put any food back, not yet!

Work your way from top to bottom, and you’ll build up enough steam to tackle the vegetable crisper. Amazing, isn’t it, how innocent little tomatoes and shy stalks of celery undergo such a malign transformation in the crisper!

Pull ’em out, pull ’em all out, and unless you bought the vegetable desperado in question within the last week, throw ’em out! Don’t forget the gooey residue puddled up under the meat drawer!

When every shelf, wall and crisper is sparkling, pay attention to the dreaded door shelves. Toss all the dribs and drabs of jelly, the salad dressings with code dates from the last decade, the stale carton of eggnog, and the teeny-weeny jars of “gourmet” this-and-that from the gift packs of Christmas Past. Be ruthless!

When the door is empty, look lively! Many newer door shelves are designed to come apart–a great help in cleaning year-old orange juice from those little nooks and crannies. One way or another, clean it out. Use window cleaner to kill the greasy fingerprints on the chrome and see-through plastic.

“But Cynthia!”, I hear you cry, “what does cleaning the refrigerator have to do with New Year’s resolutions?” Bear with me. We’ve now reached the part where we transcend our Hazel the Housemaid routine and think.

You are standing in your kitchen, face-to-face with a clean and empty refrigerator, a garbage can brimming with discarded food, a dishwasher full of plastic foodcontainers and the few hardy survivors of your harpooning session. What can be learned from all this?

Lean back against the kitchen counter. Take a hard look at what that whale has been hiding in its dark little innards. The implications will hit you in the face!

For example, when I tossed out four, count ’em, four jars of dried-out jelly and a jar of peanut butter manufactured years ago, it was clear that my children had turned a culinary corner, and the days of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were no more.

And I thought my family liked ranch dressing–but I couldn’t maintain that belief in the face of a nearly-full bottle of same dating from the Bush administration.

You’ll wring a few unpleasant admissions from yourself, too. Look carefully at what foods are wasted, especially from the vegetable crisper.

Are you doing what I’ve been doing? I’m Miss Nutritional Virtue herself at the grocery store, but those baby carrots and low-fat margarines languish uneaten in Moby’s dark corners. Did you toss out as much bruised fruit as I did? Are you buying too much–or not eating what you buy?

Use pen and notepad to jot down your discoveries and track your new resolves. Match them to your New Year’s resolutions. Is lower-fat eating on your resolution list? Then you’ll want to toss the remnants of the Christmas dinner butter and margarine and replace them with low-fat spreads, apple butter and all-fruit jellies.

Do you want to tighten the budget? Focus on the waste you’ve discovered. Do you buy grapefruit (because your mother did and it’s such a Donna Reed/Beaver’s Mom breakfast item) only to toss the shriveled husks, months later? Are you overbuying milk, or cheese, or meat? If you’ve tossed it out today, make a note to yourself to buy less–if any–on your next shopping trip.

Have family members come to expect weekly cases of soda as a staple, not a treat? Cut back, and substitute fruit juices and iced tea for those high-priced soft drinks.

Is more efficient meal planning and home organization on your list of resolutions? Well, you’ve taken a giant step forward today.

Follow up on your success by printing a free menu planner, saving money at the supermarket using the pantry principle, or learning more about menu and meal planning.

When the dust has settled and you’ve taken a good, hard, productive look at the evidence unearthed from your refrigerator, it’s time to replace the few food items that survived your scrutiny.

Done correctly, the New Year’s Spearing of the Great White Whale should all but empty the refrigerator. Don’t be afraid of that stark look! A refrigerator (unlike a freezer) is most energy-efficient when it has adequate air flow.

Gather or purchase a few little presents for your new, gleaming food storage space. Consider small-to-medium plastic baskets (with flat bottoms) to corral loose margarine sticks, and support and organize floppy packs of lunch meat and sliced cheese. Larger baskets subdivide your vegetable crisper and frustrate self-destructive, neurotic vegetables whose only motive in life is to burrow deep beneath the plastic bags and rot in peace.

Finally, arrange your storage space to promote good eating habits. Pile apples and oranges in an open basket on an open shelf–if they’re seen, they’re more likely to be eaten! Stick the big, bad, greasy cooking margarine in the far reaches of the meat drawer, so you won’t be tempted to bypass your low-fat spread. Use zipper bags bags to hold washed vegetable snacks, and put them in a special basket in the crisper, easy to see and to reach.

When the I speared my own, my very own Moby Dick The Great White Refrigerator, I was so energized by the sight of the gleaming, empty, healthy and frugal contents that I moved on to her pantry!

Such a step is only for the valiant, but when the iron strikes, toss! Dare to dump the sack of stale gumdrops, the sticky candy canes, the six boxes of opened cereal with year-old code dates, and the dusty boxes of bulgur and lentils and barley (remnants of an impractical but impassioned health kick). You’ll feel good. You’ll make room. You’ll promote health.

And if you’re like me, you’ll spend the next two days sneaking admiring looks at your gleaming, well-organized refrigerator. It may not be glamour, but it’s life!

How Does Rain Impact Your ac cleaning Unit?

Discover how rain affects your air conditioner
The simple answer? Rain is not harmful to your AC unit, whether it is a central system or window unit. A little bit of rain can actually have a positive impact, but there is more to the story.

Depending on your climate, there are certain weather patterns that you may want to prepare for when it comes to AC upkeep and maintenance. For example, Gulf-area homeowners have to be more concerned about flood conditions, while Northerners often wonder whether they should cover their ac cleaning service over winter months. Let’s break it down a bit further.

Your outdoor AC unit is built to withstand weather patterns.
Seasonal rain patterns will not have a negative impact on your AC unit. In fact, a little rain is helpful for removing any vegetation or debris that could otherwise remain lodged in the unit!

Your unit’s hardware is designed for durability, from the materials it is made from to the way the AC unit actually works. But the system is not at peak performance when it’s burdened with leaves, dirt or other buildups so if your area has been short on rain during spring through fall months, you may even want to spray the unit down with a hose. And don’t worry about getting the electrical components wet — any electrical wiring, such as those used in the condenser coil, will be insulated from wet or rainy conditions.

Are window ac cleaning units also safe in rainy weather?
Similar to central air units, window units are built to withstand the weather. However, there are some special considerations to keep in mind, especially since these smaller units are less likely to be maintained by a professional.

When using a window unit, you want to ensure that your home’s interior is properly protected from the potential of water seeping in around the edges and causing damage. For that reason, as well as to improve efficiency, it’s well worth it to take the time to ensure that your window AC unit is sealed properly (even if you plan to remove it during cooler seasons). Proper insulation will also help to prevent added humidity that window AC units can often lead to.

What to do to protect your AC unit during severe weather conditions.
Severe weather conditions, such as flash floods, are a different story. Any water that submerges the outdoor condensing unit could result in a short circuit, ultimately damaging the unit. This can also be a concern when lightning is present and poses a risk of striking the unit directly.

When the forecast is looking grim enough for electrical issues like short circuits or power surges to threaten your AC unit, take precaution by powering down. For central AC units, it is a good idea to turn the system off at both the thermostat and the circuit breaker. For window AC units, it’s wise to unplug them during the storm.

After the skies have cleared, inspect your unit for any wind damage. If there is excessive debris like leaves or dirt in the unit, rinse them away before powering back up.

It’s good to know that you won’t have to worry about your AC unit withstanding normal weather conditions. But, when facing a more severe forecast, these simple precautions can go a long way.
